BULL PINION SEAL - WHY YOUR BRAKES ARE GREASE SOAKED

The Bull Pinion Seal is the primary cause of grease soaked brakes.

These tractors left the factory with leather bull pinion seals. 
While structurally a robust looking seal, unfortunately the leather seal material deteriorates over time, the differential lubricant leaks out and soaks the brake linings.
 
New style Nitrile rubber seals have replaced the obsolete leather seals.

This is an image of Chicago Rawhide leather bull pinion seal that was original equipment on every "C" series tractor from 1948 to 1968.

Below is the modern Nitrile rubber seal that replaced the obsolete leather seal.

The above full complement cylindrical roller bearing for the 404 can be substituted, or a less than full complement cylindrical roller bearing such as a MU1209TV also can be substituted
IH went to a cylindrical roller bearing in the 404 for higher radial load capacity.

THE FARMALL "C" SIZED SERIES TRACTOR

The intent of this blog is to archive information relating to the service and maintenance of the Farmall / International Model 'C' Series tractors.

The Farmall C tractor evolved through models  Super C, 200, 230 and 240, and finally in model 404.

That evolution continued through the production years from the first 'C" in 1948 until the last 404 came off the assembly line in 1968.
Basic mechanical improvements were added, power was increased along with the tractor's structural strength to accommodate the increases in power.
Hitches went from the basic drawbar, to a 2 point fasthitch, to a 3 point hitch on the 404 model.

I will endeavor to describe here what I have learned about this series of tractor.
